Women’s Volleyball in Peru In the 1980’s the Peru women’s national volleyball team was one of the most dominant forces in the world. They won the silver medal in 1988 at the summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Recently in the 2008 Pan-American Cup they received 7th place and in 2007 they received second place in the South American Championship. They also received 11th place in the World Cup in 2007 and 18th place in the World championship in 2008. Peruvians take their sports very seriously. 2 million Peruvians will more than likely watch their team compete in the world championship finals. Also most residents in Peru will forgo their lunch breaks and watch their team compete in front of shop windows or in restraints. Peru has ranked volleyball as the second most popular sport right after soccer. In Lima’s neighborhoods and shantytowns there are around twenty-two leagues, with four divisions and more than 5,000 registered players. Most teams consist of 40 players with just jerseys and a volleyball. They normally play on sand lots or on concrete courts. The more experienced and professional players are rewarded with a good education, a job, certain office hours, and extended leaves as well as other privileges. Some players are even rewarded new cars and an apartment for themselves. The top volleyball players’ have to endure strict and tough work outs to be ready for when tournaments and competitions come about. One of the legend players in Peruvian volleyball is Afro-Peruvian Cecilia Trait. Cecilia was born on May 2nd, 1962 in Lima. When she was only 12 years old she was discovered on a sand lot in a shantytown. She like most other volleyball players started on the national team; however she started at the young age of 14 years. An amazing two years later she had her debut of the youngest of 3 all star teams to represent her country, Peru. At six foot and three inches she is one of the world’s greatest spikers of all time. She participated in three Olympic Games. She finished in fourth place in the 1984 Summer Olympics. She won the silver medal with the Peruvian national volleyball team in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea. Cecilia also received the silver medal in the 1982 World Championships as well as the bronze medal in the 1986 World Championships. In 2005 Cecilia was accepted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame. Along with her other amazing achievements Cecilia Trait she was a Peruvian Politian. In 2000 she was Elected congressman. She represented the Perú Posible.
